The Wye Rapids Hotel 1965-70

Introduction

The Wye Rapids Hotel stood in a spectacular position overlooking the River Wye at Symonds Yat West, Herefordshire. Although the hotel has now disappeared, replaced by the Wye Rapids Cottages development, it was for many decades an important part of the character of Symonds Yat.

My connection with the hotel is personal. My grandparents honeymooned at Symonds Yat in the 1920s, having arrived there by train at Symonds Yat Station. My parents honeymooned at the Wye Rapids Hotel in 1960, arriving by car, just after the station closed. I first remember visiting the Wye Rapids Hotel myself in the mid-1960s and we used to visit a couple of times a year for holidays. I have fond memories of exploring, climbing, swimming and caving from the age of 5 onwards.

When I was old enough to drive, I visited again, this time with a girlfriend. We camped at Symonds Yat East and cooked in the forest. On 4th August 1979 we saw my beloved Hereford United beat York City 3-1 at Edgar Street.

I have tried to piece together the history of this wonderful hotel - when it was built, who owned and ran it, how it developed over the years and, ultimately, what happened to it.

What began as an attempt to put dates to a handful of old photographs has turned into a much more interesting investigation. Contemporary newspaper advertisements and reports have allowed me to trace the hotel's beginnings in 1930, when Wye Rapids Hotel Ltd. was formed and staff were being recruited within a matter of months.

By August 1930 the hotel was definitely trading. There are also details relating to its early managers, licensing, financing and later owners, as well as photographs showing how the building and its grounds changed over the decades.

The later history is less straightforward. The hotel closed at the end of 1988, and if my memory serves me correctly, it stood standing for a few years before it was sold to a property developer. The Wye Rapids Cottages were build in 1995 and remain there today.

In the chronological timeline it is mentioned whether something is established by contemporary documentary evidence, or whether it is inferred from several pieces of evidence. Where something remains uncertain, I have left it as such. The aim is not to create a neat story where the evidence doesn't support one, but to reconstruct as accurately as possible what actually happened to the Wye Rapids Hotel.

If anyone can add to this research, or correct any errors, I would welcome any contributions.

Historical Timeline

Before 1930

The site at Symonds Yat West clearly had buildings and facilities before the Wye Rapids Hotel was established. A recent advertisement for a property nearby says the following, "Originally a boat shed serving the former Wye Rapids Hotel during the Victorian era." However, no independent historical source for this claim has yet been located.

There are also references to the Ayers family living at the Wye Rapids Hotel around the early 20th century: "William Ayers married Mabel Freeman they had 10 children, they lived at Hereford, Daffynant Whitchurch and the Wye Rapids Hotel, Symonds Yat. Bertie one of their children drowned in the river Wye aged 9 years and 4 other children died in infancy. His wife died in 1914."

This suggests there was a hotel on the site, or nearby, named The Wye Rapids Hotel.

Despite extensive searches of newspapers, directories, photographs and local-history sources, the origins of the Wye Rapids Hotel remain uncertain. The hotel is clearly documented by the early twentieth century, but no reliable source has yet been found establishing when the building was constructed or what occupied the site before it. If new evidence comes to light, this section will be updated.

12 August 1930 - A contemporary court report identifies: Ernest John James Baldwin, manager of the Wye Rapids Hotel, Symonds Yat, with his wife Millicent A. Baldwin. This provides a strong connection with Mrs E. J. Baldwin, who was receiving applications for the cook's position in April.
There is also a woman identified elsewhere as Millicent A. Baldwin. It is not known if this is the same person.

"Ernest John James Baldwin, manager of the Wye Rapids Hotel and Thomas Jones, licensee of the Grove Inn were summoned for conspiring or causing to be committed damage to business."

This court case was to do with a dispute with someone called "Sterrett" who had allowed parking on his land, which allegedly affected the takings of the defendants. This land later became Sterrett's Caravan Park.

24th September 1930 - A £1,100 debenture was registered in connection with Wye Rapids Hotel Ltd. This shows that the company was still arranging substantial finance after the hotel had begun trading.

1939-45

During the Second World War, a company called Pressure Lubricants Ltd used the hotel as the base for their oil refining business, which contributed to the war effort. By 1944, Pressure Lubricants was refining oil in the area, and in January 1945 the company was prosecuted after oil effluent and sewage from its operations entered Rudhall Brook and the River Wye, causing serious pollution and damage to fish life.
With normal holiday trade severely restricted during the war, providing accommodation for the company's workers may have offered the hotel a valuable alternative source of income.

1989-94

It is thought that the hotel closed its doors for the last time in 1989. From what I can remember it was becoming more and more expensive to maintain and business was less than it used to be.

Something in me remembers that the hotel stood closed for several years, before the then owner(s) actually sold it to developers. This needs clarification though.
